Peace and Justice Network of San Joaquin County, California Peace & Justice Center Just off the Miracle Mile at 231 Bedford Rd. (behind SF Floral)

During last minute conversations with our landlords, who were not happy to see us leave (not only because it complicated their lives but because they support our work), it was suggested that the Peace and Justice Center talk to the Miracle Mile Improvement District.

The MMID was looking for an office that they could afford. We met with Emily Ballus and after discussing terms, opinions on office mates and how we viewed sharing space, we realized that this was going to be easy. So…the Peace and Justice Center is upstairs for business purposes and has access to the downstairs for all our gatherings and meetings. The MMID will be downstairs daily, 9-5 for their work—improving the Miracle Mile, a cool place to be. The financial burden has been eased, we have made new friends and are off and running.

In addition to finding a roommate, Peace and Justice Network has also found a University of the Pacific intern. Sachi T will be working with Christie Kelley for the remainder of the school year, researching and writing grants for the Network. Sachi is also excited about developing resources and a curriculum on Counter-Recruitment that can be used in area high schools. There are many alternatives to enlisting in the armed services and unfortunately, many of our local youth are not exposed to these choices. We hope to have a program in place by next year.

The Peace and Justice Network Board cannot thank you all enough for your wonderful support, the donations and words of encouragement that mean so much to all of us. Throughout the whole ordeal of recognizing that we could not support the Center on our own, deciding to give it up, planning for the placement of the phone, computer, the furniture and the leftover popcorn—throughout it all, many of us maintained a sense of hope that somehow we could make it. We knew that if we could find the right support, we could sustain a Center for the San Joaquin community.

Well, we are here and now we are ready to get back to our business of education and community growth. Check out the calendar in Connections and participate in the many activities, come to us with your ideas and we will provide you with a space to meet, educate, and grow community!
